There are many home made play dough recipes to be found online, and many bloggers who swear it is better than store brand Play-Doh…IT IS!  Here is the recipe I found among The Imagination Tree’s long list.  It makes a very smooth dough with which children (and their parents) love to play.  I made my first batch at the beginning of May 2014.  At the end of July 2014 –with extra water kneaded in once a month– the dough was still great!  Now, mid-August 2014, I have the children making the dough with me.

2 Cups flour

2 Tablespoons vegetable oil

1/2 Cup salt

2 Tablespoons cream of tartar

up to 1.5 Cups boiling water

food coloring (optional)

scented oils (optional)

sand, salt, or oats for texture (optional)

1. Mix dry ingredients

2. Add boiling water and stir until sticky dough forms

3. Allow to cool, then knead until stickiness is gone (continue adding flour if dough does not easily lose the sticky feel)

4. Add food coloring, scented oils, or texture material during Step 3.
